We are at a crossroads regarding the legal use of medical cannabis for animals in California. There is a bill before the state assembly (AB 2215) that could keep pets safe by allowing veterinarians to provide pet owners with recommendations and guidance on how to use cannabis in animals. The bill also could provide guidelines of how pet specific cannabis products are sold in order to prevent accidental misuse. As a concerned California voter, I am in support of AB 2215 to make access to medical cannabis safe for pets. It is critical for the bill contain the following language:

– California veterinarians must be granted legal parity with physicians and be allowed to “recommend” medical cannabis for their patients, giving them the exact legal protections afforded to medical doctors in California 1996.

– Animal specific products available through M-license dispensaries necessitate the creation of a veterinary specific recommendation.

– Veterinarians in California who want to recommend cannabis for their patients should be educated about its use through approved continuing education courses.
